Now that cannabis is legal in many parts of the world both medicinally and recreationally, edibles have become a favourite way of indulging. Most think of THC laced brownies and cookies and other sweets when it comes to this, but we are here to open your eyes and reveal 9 savoury CBD-infused edibles you can make yourself at home. From pasta to chips, you’ll be amazed at these easy recipes.
In the past decade, laws around the world regarding cannabis have been changing rapidly. In many European countries, cannabis has been decriminalized, and in some cases legalized for medicinal and recreational purposes.
These changes have been welcomed by both seasoned and first-time cannabis users. The ability to buy and sell weed legally has made a wider variety of strains available to consumers. It has also made it easier for consumers to know exactly what they’re getting.
These options have also encouraged many cannabis users to try new approaches. For example, THC and CBD-infused edibles are a popular choice for veterans and rookies alike.
But if you hear “CBD-infused edibles,” and immediately think of brownies or cookies, think again. There are plenty of awesome savoury treats you can make with CBD as well. Let’s take a closer look at 9 of our favourites.
About CBD edibles
Before we get into the specifics about our favourite CBD-infused edibles, let’s first take a closer look at what they are. Understanding this will help you make an informed choice about which edibles are right for you.
CBD vs. THC
So what is CBD anyway? And how is it different from other types of cannabis products?
CBD (Cannabidiol) and THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) are both cannabinoids. They are also two of the most common, and most important, compounds present in cannabis.
The main difference between THC and CBD is that THC is psychoactive, while CBD is not. This means that THC gets you high: it can give you the giggles, impacts your perception of time, and can make you feel relaxed. For some users, it can also cause side effects, like anxiety and paranoia.
By contrast, CBD is popular among medicinal users, because it can help combat anxiety and depression. It also reduces inflammation and can treat chronic conditions like multiple sclerosis. It has even been shown to be an effective treatment for rare childhood seizures.
Why CBD-infused edibles?
If you’re familiar with high THC strains of cannabis, then you probably know that ingesting cannabis is often more intense than smoking it. This is because the body breaks down THC differently when it is eaten and digested than when it is smoked.
Because it does not have psychoactive properties, however, this heightened intensity is not as much of a concern with CBD. If you choose a CBD oil with only trace amounts of THC and make the edibles yourself, you can enjoy the great benefits that CBD has to offer while also enjoying a great snack.
CBD-infused edibles are a great choice for folks who don’t care for using a vaporizer. They’re also a good option for people who take CBD medicinally and want to switch things up a bit.
Making CBD-infused ingredients
Now that we have some background on what CBD-infused edibles are, let’s look at how you can make some for yourself. One of the best ways to make a wide variety of edibles is to start off making your own ingredients.
1. Make your own CBD oil-infused butter
An ingredient like butter is versatile and can be added to many savoury snacks.
When you are making your own CBD butter, the key is to infuse the CBD oil in the butter slowly, and over a low heat. This allows the CBD to become incorporated without getting scorched, and without evaporating the active compounds.
We recommend starting with about 15 ml of oil for 500 gr of butter. Start by cutting the butter into several pieces, and then placing it in a medium saucepan. Next, pour in the CBD oil, and about 1 quart of water.
Set the burner to a low heat, and cook for about 3-4 hours. Make sure to check on and stir the butter about every 30 minutes. When you are done combining the CBD oil and butter, pour the mixture into a bowl, and chill it for two hours.
Once you’ve made your own CBD-infused butter, you can use it to make any variety of savoury snacks. One of our favourites is simply melting the butter over some hot popcorn. You can also use it as a condiment at dinner time on your meat or potatoes.
But you can also use it to make biscuits, or even just spread it on toast. And, if you do get a sweet tooth, you can use the butter to make any of your favourite baked goods.
2. Other CBD-infused oils to make
If you’re not a fan of butter, that doesn’t mean you can’t make a versatile CBD-infused oil to use in several recipes. There are plenty of oils that can work well with cannabis.
For instance, both coconut oil and olive oil can be great ingredients for CBD-infused edibles. You can use the same method for infusing butter for infusing either of these oils.
Once you’ve made the oil, you can use it in several ways. For instance, you can use the CBD-infused oil to sauté garlic or other vegetables. You can even use it for deep frying if that’s your kind of thing.
Cooking with CBD
Once you have CBD ingredients, you can do a variety of cooking with it. In addition to cooking with CBD butter or oil, you can even add CBD oil to certain sauces or broths.
When you’re cooking with CBD, just make sure to choose entrees that are not cooked above 180 Celsius. Hotter temperatures than this can evaporate the CBD.
Let’s take a look at some of our favourite dishes to incorporate CBD in. These tips and recipes are a great way to add variety to your CBD use.
3. Adding CBD to your pasta
Pasta is one of our favourite CBD-infused edibles. Putting CBD oil in cheesy carbonara or a creamy Béchamel sauce is a great way to incorporate CBD into a savoury dish.
Baked pasta, like mac and cheese or lasagne, can also make good edibles. Again, just make sure not to bake them at too high of a temperature.
For satisfying your craving for Italian food, pasta is a better choice than pizza. Pizza needs to be baked at a high temperature, so any ingredient you add the oil to would have the CBD evaporated out of it.
When deciding how much CBD oil to add to the pasta sauce, always start off slow. It’s better to make the dish too weak the first time around, and know that you’ll need to add more the next time.
4. Make your own chips
Another great way to use your CBD-infused oil is to make your own chips at home. These homemade CBD-infused edibles are great for snacking on at night, or as a side with lunch.
While you could probably fry the chips without getting the oil too hot, it’s a safer bet to bake them in the oven. This method is also healthier.
To make oven-baked potato chips, cut the potato very thinly, and lay the slices out on the baking sheet. For the best results, use a mandolin to slice the potato. Once the slices are laid out on the baking sheet, sprinkle some salt and some CBD-infused olive oil over them.
But potatoes aren’t the only vegetable you can make chips out of. For instance, kale chips provide a healthy alternative, and can also be made with CBD oil.
You can even make chips out of beets, or carrots. Really, any vegetable cut thin enough and sprinkled with oil can make a delicious chip. Feel free to experiment, and find the veggie chip you like the most.
5. CBD-infused salad dressings or condiments
If you want to avoid the danger of overcooking the CBD oil, you can stick to recipes that don’t need to be cooked. Salad dressings and other condiments are a great option for this.
For instance, you can use your CBD-infused olive oil to make a vinaigrette salad dressing. You can then use this as a base for a variety of delicious savoury salads. Or, you can use it as a marinade for your favourite meats or fish.
You can even use CBD olive oil as an ingredient to make your own homemade mayonnaise. With this condiment, you can make great CBD-infused sandwiches and BLTs. Or, you can make a flavourful aioli as a dip.
But there’s no need to stop with mayonnaise. CBD oil can be added to a variety of shelf-stable condiments, including ketchup, barbecue sauce, or even Sriracha. This way, you can enjoy your CBD infusions with just about any meal.
6. CBD curries
Many people love the taste of cannabis and can add CBD oil to just about anything they eat. Others, however, dislike the herby flavour of cannabis and need other flavours to cover it.
A curry is a great way to mask the flavours of cannabis, if that’s what you’re going for. The strong flavours of spices, herbs, and nuts that go into a curry our powerful enough to overshadow the cannabis. Also, cooking the curry with the CBD oil in it for a long time at a low heat is a great way to make sure all of the flavours are well incorporated.
Making a cannabis curry is an especially great option if you’ve made CBD-infused coconut oil. The coconut flavour works well in many Indian and Thai recipes.
7. CBD smoothies
Drinking a smoothie as a meal replacement has become a popular trend. These drinks are typically packed full of nutrients, especially when they include leafy greens like spinach or kale in addition to yogurt and fruit.
Adding CBD oil can be a great way to make your morning smoothie more interesting. What also helps is that CBD oil does not affect the texture of the drink.
Having a CBD-infused smoothie in the morning is especially helpful if you tend to wake up with aches and pains, or if you have anxiety in the morning. You can even have your smoothie later on in the day as a replacement for a sugary dessert like ice cream.
8. CBD granola bars
Another great option for making CBD-infused edibles is making snacks that you can easily take on the road with you. For instance, homemade granola bars make a great breakfast that you can grab easily in the morning. You can use your CBD-infused coconut oil to make your own homemade granola bars.
Because you’re making these yourself, you can decide which ingredients go in. You could go with a classic bar that includes raisins, or other dried fruit. Or, you could go for something more savoury, by making a bar with curry and nuts.
9. CBD-Infused beer
Craft brewing and small batch beers have become an extremely popular trend lately. Of course, home brewing is the ultimate way to enjoy small batch beer just the way you like it.
If you’ve tried brewing beer at home, you might be surprised to learn that you can infuse CBD during the brewing process. Cannabis is actually a relative of hops, the herb that is put in beer that gives IPAs their distinctive bitter, citrusy taste.
CBD oil can be blended into beer to make earthy IPAs, pale ales, or even stouts.
Even if you’re not ready to take on home brewing, however, you can still enjoy some CBD-infused adult beverages. For instance, you can soak CBD oil into a brandy, gin, vodka, or whiskey.
Then, you could use this liquor to make some delicious CBD-infused cocktails. Again, however, don’t drink as much as you usually would. These cocktails will have an additional active substance, so they’ll affect you differently than other drinks do.
The right edibles for you
To get the most enjoyment out of your CBD-infused edibles, they should taste great, and be made with the right ingredients. This will ensure that you have a great experience.
